弗兰克•奥尔巴赫出生於柏林一个犹太家族中。他的家庭在１９３９年因纳粹而逃离到英国。他从１９４８年至１９５２年在圣马丁美术学院学美术，并在伦敦的市镇理工学院上夜校。奥尔巴赫其后从１９５２至１９５５年在皇家艺术大学 (Royal College of Art)学艺术。在１９７８年，英国艺术委员会为他在伦敦Hayward画廊办了一个回顾展。他还曾经在１９８６年威尼斯双年展的英国馆和阿姆斯特丹国立博物馆举办过个人展。他的作品被很多重要博物馆收藏。
