Calder: Extreme Cantilever

This exhibition illustrates a pivotal shift in Calder’s formal and conceptual approach to spatial abstraction amid the global upheaval of the Second World War. On loan from the Calder Foundation and esteemed private collections, Calder’s three standing mobiles – Extreme Cantilever, More Extreme Cantilever, and Extrême porte à faux III – showcase the artist’s unbridled imagination and intuitive genius that cement him as one of the 20th century’s foremost innovators. YOAN CAPOTE: SEE ESCAPES

Curated by Joachim Pissarro 24 May - 26 Jul 2024 London Ben Brown Fine Arts is delighted to present SEE ESCAPES, an exhibition of new works by Cuban artist Yoan Capote, curated by esteemed art historian Joachim Pissarro. SEE ESCAPES is deeply rooted in the context of Capote’s upbringing in Cuba, an island marked by profound historical and geographical circumstances. Influenced by the tumultuous legacy of the Cold War era and the pervasive uncertainty about the future, his work reflects the societal tensions and ideological confrontations of his surroundings. Capote draws inspiration from myriad art historical movements, from the awe-inspiring landscapes and seascapes of Romantic painters Caspar David Friedrich, John Constable, and J.M.W Turner, to the rough materiality of the Arte Povera movement. Through his work, Capote offers a reflection of society's complexities and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Read more

Gavin Turk: The Conspiracy of Blindness

15 Mar - 10 May 2024 London Ben Brown Fine Arts is thrilled to announce ‘The Conspiracy of Blindness’, our fifth solo exhibition of British artist Gavin Turk at the London gallery (15th March – 10th May). The exhibition will reveal a recent series of still-life paintings that pay homage to early 20th century Italian artist Giorgio Morandi. In typical Turk style, he has subverted Morandi’s serene arrangements of vases and handmade vessels, by replacing the models with quotidian product packaging. Read more

Vik Muniz: FOTOCUBISMO

20 Apr - 26 May 2023 London Ben Brown Fine Arts is pleased to announce FOTOCUBISMO, the gallery’s fourth solo exhibition in the London gallery of internationally acclaimed Brazilian artist and photographer Vik Muniz, opening this April.

Exhibited for the first time in the United Kingdom, FOTOCUBISMO features work from Muniz’s most recent Surfaces series, which explores concepts of perception, reality, and representation while challenging traditional notions of materiality. Muniz’s work often draws inspiration from iconic images from art history. Looking to Cubist masters such as Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris and Georges Braque, these unique works are a result of the artist’s hybrid technique of photographing handcrafted, three-dimensional elements – most notably painting and collaged components – which are reprocessed through photographic collages. Muniz's newest works invite viewers to question and explore what lies beneath the surface, and to dissect each layer amidst the overlapping interventions.

These abstract studies compel the viewer to closely investigate the dichotomy between the physical object and its depiction, while at the same time reinventing the possibilities and questions around the construction of a photographic image. This exploration of iconic images from art history, which Muniz has repeatedly revisited throughout his career, furthers the artist’s investigations into the contradictions between visual perception, the physical world and art historical context.
