7 August - 21 February 2015
Drawing on the Palm Springs Art Museum's permanent collection and selective loans, the exhibition looks beyond the classical definition of a still life and explores why the still life continues to be a significant vehicle of expression. Through paintings, sculptures, photography, prints, and objects, the exhibition identifies the powerful associational value of time, place, or occurrence to encourage meaningful encounters with everyday objects and transpiring visual images. New media installations by artists such as Jennifer Steinkamp and Catherine Chalmers expand beyond the conventions of still life to produce alluring contemporary innovations while Ori Gersht creates a mesmerizing film of exploding still lifes.
